The average fare at Wichita Eisenhower National Airport in Q4 2020 dropped 29% from Q4 2019. The inflation-adjusted average fare for the quarter was $282.68 and for the year, the fare averaged $298.56. The U.S. average domestic fare for 2020 was $292. This was the lowest inflation-adjusted annual fare since the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) began collecting such records in 1995. In 2020, Wichita’s fare was 53% lower than its all-time high in 2000.
The dramatic drop in fares was due to the pandemic as leisure travelers stayed home and business travel budgets were cut, opting for zoom meetings. Also, travel to international destinations was almost completely halted. In addition to lowering fares, airlines have eliminated change and cancel fees to stimulate travel.
Wichita’s fare is in line with those in the region.
