19 years ago, on September 11, 2001, while America watched in horror as the World Trade Center collapsed, airports across the U.S. were dealing with thousands of unexpected flights that were forced to land immediately. On that dreadful day, 22 passenger aircraft and seven cargo planes landed at ICT with roughly 1,300 passengers who unexpectedly spent three days in Wichita.
On September 7, 2011, TSA held a ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11. At the ceremony, TSA unveiled a stunning memorial that contains a portion of a steel beam from the World Trade Center that was hit on 9/11. This memorial is now displayed on the mezzanine level of our terminal.
In remembrance of this tragedy, the Wichita Airport Authority issued a special publication for the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attack. We’d like to share that publication with you again as we will never forget.
