The new Wichita Mid-Continent Airport terminal has won an international award for excellence in design, airport officials announced on Tuesday. The new terminal, scheduled to open in 2015, won the “Gold Award in the Unbuilt Category” from the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), a professional networking and educational association that aims to enhance quality of life through excellence in design. IIDA has a worldwide membership of more than 12,000.
The new 12-gate, 265,000 square-foot terminal was designed by HNTB Architecture in association with GLMV Architecture. Various sustainable design elements were incorporated into the project with a goal of achieving a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certified rating when construction is completed.
Architects were charged with creating a facility that highlighted Wichita’s status as the Air Capital of the World. The new airport will feature an exhibit highlighting Wichita’s rich heritage in aviation. All spaces will be naturally lit supplemented by electric lighting, with generous glazing and skylights to maintain a link with the outside and its changing sky.
Major interior finishes include perforated stainless steel wall panels, terracotta wall systems and terrazzo floors. All finishes are designed to be durable with high appearance retention and a timeless quality.
“We are excited that the new terminal has won this design recognition and we’re eager to move forward with bidding of the new terminal later this year and opening day in 2015,” said Victor White, Director of Airports.
