Date: May 8, 2012
May 8, 2012 marks the 10th anniversary of AirTran Airways’ low-fare service in Wichita. The day will be marked with celebrations in the main terminal and AirTran gate. AirTran Airways was purchased by Southwest Airlines in May 2011 and expects to complete the integration process within the next few years. Southwest service is expected to begin in Wichita sometime in 2013.
Passengers will be treated to cake and refreshments in the gate. AirTran/Southwest representatives will be on hand throughout the day to give away goodies to AirTran customers. The Prairie Rose Rangers will perform in the main terminal from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm, and a press conference will be held at 4:00 pm.
AirTran has lowered fares to Wichita’s top eastern destinations by an average of 25%, and has increased traffic to those destinations by 60%. Where the U.S. average domestic fare has increased 8.3% since 2000, Wichita’s fare is 3.8% less than in 2000.
