The Wichita Mid-Continent Airport Sustainability Program has been selected as a recipient of the 2013 Airports Going Green Award. This prestigious award recognizes the value of the Airport’s environmental and conservation efforts, as well as outstanding leadership in pursuit of sustainability within the aviation industry. The Wichita Airport Authority will be recognized for its efforts and presented the Award at the 6th Annual Airports Going Green Conference in Chicago, IL on November 13, 2013. The Airports Going Green Conference is the aviation industry’s leading sustainability forum, bringing sustainability leaders and innovators together from all over the U.S. and around the world. The Airports Going Green Conference is hosted by the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) and the American Association of Airport Executives. The press release issued by the Chicago Department of Aviation announced Wichita’s selection for the award.
Past recipients of the Airports Going Green Award include: San Francisco International Airport, Abu Dhabi Airports Company, Port of Portland, Toronto Pearson International Airport, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Ithaca Thompkins Airport, DFW International Airport, Winnipeg International Airport, and Denver International Airport.
Mid-Continent Airport’s sustainability program began in 2008 with a recycling program for businesses and travelers in the airport terminal. Since then, the program has expanded and continued to build a culture of environmental stewardship by expanding its recycling program to tenant partners located on the Airport campus, known as the “Green Team”.
The Airport’s sustainability program was recognized in Airport Magazine in its February/March 2011 issue. The Metro-Wichita Air Quality Improvement Task Force awarded Mid-Continent Airport with the Regional Clean Air and Sustainability Award for 2011.
